Wigzell Wows in Bert Fenton Speedcar Cup!

February 22, 2016

There's no doubt, Bert Fenton would have watched Saturday night's Speedcar A-Main at Speedway City with a big grin; not only seeing Todd Wigzell in the DK Fabrications S88 machine win his second feature of the season, but also having witnessed a super close battle by the top four finishers over the twenty lap A-Main!

Hosted in conjunction with round three of the SA Speedcars Blackjack Series thanks to American Tire & Racing Services; the event was also the 2nd annual running of the JAV Engines Bert Fenton Cup; which was created to remember a dedicated supporter of SA Speedcars who introduced a number of competitors to the division over decades.

Unfortunately an incident earlier in the night saw the loss of Jamie Crouch and Brett Ireland from the A-Main line up, with too much damage for the cars to hit the track again. The four pile up in heat two saw Crouch roll and Bennett hit the wall, but in a great display of sportsmanship, the front end in the BCR Motorsport SA25 machine was replaced before the A-Main with assistance from other teams!

As top qualifier, Wigzell formed on the front row of the grid alongside Nathan Squiers for the green, with 20 laps on the board. Wigzell got the early advantage at the start, with a tussle underway betwween Hall, Bennett and Squiers which continued throughout the race, in one of the closest competitions we've seen all season!

Whilst Wigzell went on to claim the win having held the lead from flag to flag despite the constant pressure from his closest rival, Ben Hall; the battle of the race went to Nathan Squiers and Todd Bennet who switched positions multiple times before Squiers stole the last podium place from Bennett over the finish line! It was so close the crowd weren't even sure who came in third until it was confirmed by Speedway City officials!

The Speedcars next hit the track at Westline Speedway Whyalla for the 66th South Australian Speedcar Championship on March 19th.
