Woodside's Nathan Squiers and the Jarrett Mazda 86 Racing team claimed their first ever Speedcar A-Main at Murray Bridge Speedway last night; taking out night one of the Easter Speedcar Double Header, ahead of reigning SA Speedcar Club Champion Ben Hall and Queensland's Anthony Chaffey!
Squiers, who tied as highest qualifier in points with Mark Harrington after both scored a heat win and a second, started from position two for the A-Main. After grabbing the lead at the first corner, he was virtually untouchable; screaming away from his closest competitors in a perfect drive under fairly slick conditions before the yellows were pulled for a turned Jamie Crouch.
At the restart, recently returned Speedcar racer Tim Caddy made a great showing in his S16 machine, taking on Chaffey for 2nd, which also brought 4th running Ben Hall into action; the trio all vying for the podium placings, allowing Squeirs to again speed away from the pack.
While the bulk of the field stuck low to avoid the loose surface, Queenslander Anthony Chaffey put on a great show by trying the highline, battling it out with Hall, Caddy, Harrington and Crouch over the race. As lapped traffic came into contention in the closing laps, Hall had managed to snare 2nd place from the Queenslander and gain some ground on Squiers, but it was Squiers who took the win before an appreciative crowd, followed home by Hall, Chaffey, Caddy, Harrington, Crouch and Gilbert.
This places Squiers into the perfect position heading into tonight's Speedcar Stampede at Speedway City thanks TheSpeedwayShop.com! Sitting on 120 points for the double header, Squiers is a very comfortable 33 points ahead of his closest challenger for the bond double header prize pool, Ben Hall on 87, following by Mark Harrington on 78, Anthony Chaffey on 77, and Tim Caddy on 57 to round out the top five.
Tonight's action with TheSpeedwayShop.com Speedcar Stampede not only adds to the above pointscore but has an increased purse and a bonus $250 to Squiers if he can win tonight's A-Main event. The Speedway Shop's Speedcar Jackpot which normally increases by $50 with every consecutive win, has tonight been bumped to $250 on top of the already cashed-up winners cheque!
Likewise, with the season coming to its end in April, these races are also tightly contested for the American Tire & Racing Services SA Speedcar Club Championship! Todd Bennett leads from Todd Wigzell by only 25 points, followed by Jamie Crouch on 480, and both Hall and Squiers on 472. Since Wigzell is out of contention with engine issues, the race is on for Crouch, Hall & Squiers to make their mark tonight!
